Whaaaaat?….. Lone Ranger

Photos and log by Charlotte

After hearing various alarm call since about 5am, I decided to go and see what was causing them. We drove in the general direction, disturbing a little Francolin family having an early morning dustbath, and found a group of Impala, all faces facing thick bush, their ears sharply alert and making their very loud alarm calls.

We sat watching and listening and a few seconds later I saw a leopard in the thicket, crouching, so I imagine stalking. Impala and monkey alarm calls reached a crescendo. The leopard started walking towards me through soft golden, quite tall grass. Swishing his white tipped tail over his head, he had obviously lost hunt focus. He came and sat quite close to me for a while and then turned and walked back the way he had come

Impala were telling two tales, still on high alert, but one group looking left, the other to the right. I couldn’t believe my eyes… three lions came slowly from the thicket….eeeek!

The leopard vanished as one lioness literally leapt towards the nearby anthill. We then heard the deep rumble and growls that tell you lions are eating. After listening for a while I drove towards camp and lo and behold, Batholomew was walking through the grass towards me – what a morning!!
